Chapter 6

Fiona

I’m standing in the kitchen of Ainsley’s lakeside cabin unloading my groceries and still feeling so perplexed that she asked me to come up here to check on her house. Of course, because Ainsley is a Montgomery and heiress to a hotel empire, the “lakeside cabin” is only a cabin in the same way that War and Peace is a novella.

I go over our last conversation in my head again.

“Ainsley wanted me to come here to her cabin to check things out because she was suspicious that the caretakers have been neglecting things.” Okay so I’m not going over the conversation in my head, but rather out loud. I glance around the cabin. Everything is spotless and in perfect condition.

“She’s clearly up to something. She did say she thought it would be good for me to get out of town and breathe in the nice, clean country air. Still strange, but I’m here now so might as well make the most of it.”

I finish unloading the food into the fridge and then the pantry. I’m plugging in the electric tea kettle when the front door of the cabin opens. I grab the closest thing to me to use as a makeshift weapon. It’s a whisk. Yep, I’m terrifying.

Then I realize who is standing there. Mateo. Glowering at me. My breath catches because no man has ever looked so unbelievably handsome. My mouth falls open and I know I’m staring, but damn, he looks good.

He’s got jeans on that mold perfectly to his thick, muscular thighs. And the faded black t-shirt hugs his sculpted shoulders and chest. That trimmed beard draws attention to his chiseled jawline and the pouty fullness of his lips. Then there are his eyes, intense and dark and aimed right at me.

“Mateo?” I manage, finally finding my voice. “What are you doing here?”

He drops his duffle bag on the floor and it lands with a loud thump. And then he’s coming towards me.

I take a step backwards.

“I’ve been trying to find you.”

“Oh?”

“Yeah. I thought you worked at the hotel. I tried to leave a message there on more than one occasion because I thought they were lying to me. They probably have me on a stalker list by now.”

I release an awkward chuckle. He’s so close now I could reach out and touch him. The cool, masculine scent of him wafts to my nose and I inhale deeply. And my body responds immediately, my nipples tighten and my pussy floods with arousal.

“Did you know I was on your brother’s team?” He steps towards me again.

I move away until my back hits the refrigerator behind me.

His eyes search my face. “Did you know?”

“Yes.”

He leans down and runs his nose up the side of my throat to right below my ear. “Is that why you’ve been avoiding me?” His voice is low and gravely and I’m pretty sure I might be panting. “Tell me the truth, princess.”

I release a shuddering breath. “Ezra won’t be happy if we see each other, and he could make things difficult for you.
